The Secret Life of the Adder, The Vanishing Viper by Nicholas Milton.
In 2019, a survey of Adders was published, and it has been the most all-inclusive analysis of Adders ever done. As the data indicates in the 'Make the Adder Count', the species will vanish from most of Britain in the upcoming 15-20 years. This is if we take do not take action now to protect the species. The Adder is a priority conservation species under the Biodiversity Action Plan, but unfortunately not a single nature reserve in Britain has been allocated to protect it. Over time humans have victimised the Adder in Britain as it is our only venomous snake. Due to this, the adder population is in peril, its encreasingly diminishing numbers occurring on small, isolated and fragmented sites.
Following the findings in 'Make the Adder Count', 90% of the sites where the Adder can still be found, have 10 or less adult snakes, and are now thought to be very vulnerable and are heading towards local extinction. Despite the adder population having an alarming number decline, it is still not too late to save the species if we act upon this data straight away. This book shares with us, a 10 point adder action plan. If this plan is which if brought into action, it could help to rebuild the adder to its original range across Britain. This book also contains a history of the Adder species and reveals the life it lives in secret, which has allowed it to be the most successful snake in the world. This book is a tale of our doing, one which typifies the age of extinction through which we are all living, and as humans are all accountable.
