Atelopus is a large genus of Bufonidae, which are commonly known as harlequin frogs or toads. Atelopus are found in the wild from Central and South America, ranging as far north as Costa Rica and as far south as Bolivia. They are a diurnal petit species, which are usually vibrantly colored. Most species are found in mid-to-high elevation streams.
Unfortunatley his genus has been horribly affected by huge numbers of declines - approx 70% of species now considered endangered or extinct. They are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, introduced species, and the Chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.
